The original plan was to stitch most of the Balloon in a bright, metallic thread and to fill the diamond-shapes with both large and small beads... the charcoal-coloured thread was reserved for the basket-ropes.

Unfortunately, this created a bit of a 'monster' that was unwilling to share the lime-light with the other elements in the piece. A stripped-down, 'unplugged' version was allowed to stay in the final design as a companion to an equally simple Kite.
