CROSS STITCH DESIGNS

When the Four Freedoms were illustrated in cross-stitches alone, the top of Liberty's head dominated the piece.

Rendered in backstitches alone, they appeared reedy and lacking in substance (not quite the right effect for such weighty values).

Using cross-stitches for the Freedoms in the centre-front portion of the picture and backstitches for those which appear at the sides allowed Liberty's crown to taper off in a more natural way.
