CROSS STITCH DESIGNS

'Neptune/Poseidon'
Design Diary

Several years ago, my intention was to stitch Neptune/Poseidon's face on Shape-It fabric.

PLEASE CLICK ON THE THUMBNAILS FOR LARGER VIEWS AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.

"Shape-It" is a stitching fabric that conforms to just about any shape.

My plan was to design a cross-stitch piece that could be molded into a three-dimensional, decorative needlework mask.

As an experiment, I decided to start stitching a rudimentary version of Neptune.
Since the Shape-It fabric wasn't going to work, it was time to re-think the whole concept.
Abandoning the 3-D mask idea...
At this point, I'd like to give a historical perspective to this type of design.

Arcimboldo (sometimes spelt Archimboldo) seems to be acknowledged as the "father" of 'composite art'. For a brief bio and several examples of his work, please click here.

My fellow designer, Su Poole, is a multi-taltented woman. She generously offers her freebie cross-stitch interpretation of Britain's legendary Green Man (another composite image) on her web-site. (By the way, she offers several other free charts... including some lovely horse designs and a Phoenix).

This is an early concept drawing.

Neptune was ready to rise from the sea...

As always, Neale did a wonderful job framing 'Neptune/Poseidon'.

When I was finished stitching Neptune, I decided to see how he would appear on a hand-dyed fabric.

Thank you very much for taking the time to explore the development of Neptune/Poseidon. I hope you've enjoyed it.
