CROSS STITCH DESIGNS
Far Out (Hippy)
This Hippy is surrounded by many icons of her era. Clockwise from upper-left... a hand is giving you the Peace sign; the ultimate expression of coolness ( "Far Out" ) is spelled in balloony letters across the top of her head; a Carnaby Street sign (the grooviest destination of anyone dedicated to fashion) is over to the right. The hippy is wearing a tie-dyed bandanna and, of course, has a flower in her hair; her Granny Glasses display an op-art design and a Peace symbol. A purple lava lamp gently oozes over in the lower-right corner. Across the bottom, the word 'love' is splayed out in tie-dyed glory with a Mood Ring filling the role of the letter 'O'. Look closely now, a little Happy Face is peeking out of the yellow stitching at the bottom-left. These years were full of distinctive smells... one of them was Patchouli (you'll find the name of this exotic floral fragrance running up the left side of this picture).
Areas of embellishment are as follows: Granny Glasses (metallic copper and gold); lava lamp (metallic silver); hair and face highlights (white rayon) and mood ring (metallic silver).
Norma B. did a wonderful job of customizing her "Far Out (Hippy)" piece...
she chose a lovely 28-count hand-dyed fabric from
Sugar Maple Fabrics
(a colour named 'Garden Princess') and won 2nd place at her country fair for her customized, California version, of 'Far Out: Hippy'. Congratulations, Norma, on creating a terrific, one-of-a-kind Hippy!
Please note that although the original piece, like most of my cross-stitch designs, was stitched with 1 strand of thread, Norma chose to use 2 strands since she was stitching over 2 threads on a 28-count fabric.
